No one person can have the same views, ideas, and knowledge as other individuals. In the war story, Across Five Aprils, by Irene Hunt, there are different characters in the story that have different viewpoints of how the war has been going on. PeopleĞ¢’s view in this story is that many believed that the war would be quick with little bloodshed, but they soon find out that they are not absolutely right. People also see the worst in other people. They want to think of people as the opposite of what they really are. Different people have different viewpoints in the war also. Much of the human nature is revealed in the different ways people view the world, each other, and themselves as well as how easily their minds are changed.
One view of human nature is how a person’s idea is altered from experiences. For example, the North thought that the war was going to be short, but they soon found out that the war would turn into a long lasting bloodshed war. “I don’t know if anybody ever wins a war, Jeth.” p. 101. In this book, Jethro has different thoughts of the war. In the beginning of the war Jethro thinks of something, but then in the end, he becomes more mature of the major effects of a war. ”It was just one awful roar at the battle, with the cannons shooting and the screams.” p. 125. Being in wars can change the people and the troops fighting in the war. “The union troops were finally turned into a confused, bewildered, scurrying for safety; no more talk about ending the whole affair.” p. 123. Once people fought in the war, they discover that it was not like they thought.
People also see different qualities in people. Usually they see the worst in people because of the sayings they heard about the person. “People blame him for the mistakes of his generals, and they’re just as bitter about his grammar, appearance, and family.” p. 201.Wars can change peoples idea of a person and change the characteristics of themselves. Many people think differently. “God bless old U.S. Grant, Ğ¡they shrieked – they laughed and cried, and nearly everybody though the war would be over in a matter of weeks.” p. 165. Sometimes it takes a while for people around you to have trust in you, because of only one event that you did that was wrong. Then when you come back and do a good deed you get the people’s trust back. “Everyone mistrusting Dave Burdon for the time when he got drunk, never giving him a chance until he save Jethro.” p. 178. This is how different people can have different opinions and characteristics.
Many individuals also hold different points toward a cause or event that had happened. Many people held different viewpoints of slavery. Some wanted it, others thought that it should be legal. “What the South wants is the right to live as it sees freely without interference, but what about the people in living in the dumps.” p. 120. When individuals want others to follow them, they do whatever it takes to make them follow them. “and for every evil that you can fear in me in the name of slavery.” p. 78. Other people just don’t care for a cause. They just go with anything or try not to get involved with society. “Bill saying that neither side is right they are all corrupt in the same deed under a different name.” p. 145. People can have different views on the ideas, and when they say their ideas to the world, people have different views on them.
As many people can see, the human nature and character is unique and special. The novel Across Five Aprils shows how experiences, viewpoints, and opinions influence the human character. When character is affected by what experiences they run into, they change their whole character. Different people see different views in each other, and when they see the opposite of a person then what they really are, someone must have told them beforehand. Many individuals also have different viewpoints then others. One can enjoy an experience while the other person truly hates it. These human qualities are all different in each and every one of us. Human character determines what kind of person someone is and it shows what each one of us is as a person.
